Choosing the right catheter type is more than just picking between male and female, and it requires a good understanding of your body’s unique needs. Intermittent catheters come in all shapes, sizes and materials, so consider whether a more advanced product, like a closed system intermittent catheter, is right for you.

What is a Closed System Intermittent Catheter?

Like all intermittent catheters, closed system catheters function to help the user empty their bladder of urine in a controlled process. Contained in their own sterile collection bag, closed system intermittent catheters come pre-lubricated for easy insertion. As the catheter is contained in the sterile collection bag, there is no need to find a receptacle or toilet to empty the bladder. This is one of the main features the closed system intermittent catheter more hygienic and convenient for both men and women.

Compact and transportable, closed system intermittent catheters are perfect for traveling or life on the go.

How Is a Closed System Intermittent Catheter Different?

Closed system intermittent catheters are different from other intermittent catheters in a few ways. Sometimes called “no-touch” or “touchless” catheters, closed system catheters come already in the bag and lubricated for easy insertion. The ability to insert the closed system intermittent catheter without having to come in contact with the catheter itself, which helps further reduce the risk of contamination and infection.

The accompanying bag is also unique to the closed system intermittent catheters, because it allows you to empty your bladder whenever you need – without the pressure of having to find a bathroom like with other intermittent catheter types.

    Features and Functions

In addition to the pre-lubrication and in-house packaging, closed system intermittent catheters have similar features across brands. These include:

    • Catheter Cap: The cap keeps the catheter and bag sealed, sterile and protected until ready for use.
    • Introducer Tip: The guided tip allows for a helpful insertion past the initial opening of the urethra, where the threat for bacterial infection is at its highest to avoid contamination further up the urethra.
    • Pre-Lubricated Catheter: As we mentioned above, the closed system intermittent catheter comes pre-lubricated within the packaging to allow for a touchless insertion process.
    • Collection Bag:Often accompanied by measurements to gauge output, closed system intermittent catheters have a built-in collection bag to help avoid the need for a receptacle.

Some closed system catheters come with the complete set of self-insertion supplies, while others come with just the bag and catheter tube. If you’re starting out with a closed system intermittent catheter for the first time, or it’s been a while and you don’t have any more supplies on-hand, a catheter with insertion supplies is a must-get.
